Flemington is the historic seat of Hunterdon County — a dense Victorian downtown where mature trees grow tight against landmark homes. Nothing gets dropped here. Every piece comes down on a rope, clear of porches, slate roofs and the neighboring property, and that is simply what the town costs to work in.

Tree Removal
We take trees down in sections rather than felling them whole. It is slower and it costs more in labor, and it is the only way to remove a tree standing over a roof, a fence or a driveway without something getting broken.
Thinning the crown lets wind pass through the tree instead of pushing against it. A dense canopy acts like a sail, and it is usually the whole tree that goes over rather than a branch that breaks.
A stump left in a lawn is a mower-wrecker and a trip hazard, and it never really goes away — hardwood stumps can sit there for a decade, settling unevenly as the roots rot underneath.
We check the stock before it goes in. Nursery trees that have sat too long in the pot come with circling roots that will strangle the trunk years later, and that is not something you can fix after planting.
Selective clearing is usually the better call. Taking out the poor and the dying while keeping the sound specimens leaves you with usable ground and a property that still looks like something.
The dangerous part of a storm is often what did not fall. Hung-up limbs come down later without warning, frequently on whoever went out to start clearing up.
Flemington Protects “Large Trees” — 10 Inches and Up
Flemington's rule is narrower than most and cheap to comply with. Section 2-10.13 protects any tree with a caliper of at least 10 inches measured 4.5 feet up, which the code calls a large tree. Below that, no permit. Above it, a written application goes to the Borough zoning official, who answers within seven days, and the $10 permit must be displayed at the address while the work is done.
Approval turns on whether removal is needed for reasonable use of the property, or whether you will replace the tree with one of at least 2.5 inches of the same or an equivalent species. Diseased, dead and storm-fallen trees are exempt, as is anything endangering public safety. Note that large tree status runs with the land, so it transfers when a property is sold.
Only “large trees” are protected — 10 inches caliper or more at 4.5 feet
Fee: $10, and the permit must be displayed at the property during the work
The zoning official responds within seven days; permits run three months
Exempt: diseased, dead, storm-fallen, or trees endangering public safety
Replacement is at least 2.5 inches, same or an equivalent species
