How to Tell If Your Tree Needs to Be Removed
Deciding whether a tree comes down starts with an honest look at the whole picture — the ground, the roots, the trunk, and the crown. That’s how we judge whether a tree is a real risk to your home or your neighbor’s.

- Sudden or heavy leaning.
A tree that shifts or leans quickly often means the root system has failed — and that tree is a hazard. A slow, established lean can sometimes be diagnosed and managed instead.
- Damaged or decaying roots.
Trees can survive a surprising amount of root damage, but there’s a limit. We’ll inspect the root zone and give you a straight answer about whether yours has passed it.
- Cracks, cavities, and crevices in the trunk.
Storms, insects, lightning, ice, and disease all leave their mark. When damage cuts through the layer that carries water and nutrients — roughly a quarter of the bark or more — removal is usually the safest option.
- Dead or hanging branches in the upper crown.
Sometimes careful pruning solves the problem; sometimes it’s the first sign of a declining tree. We’ll inspect the crown and tell you which one you’re looking at.

If I Cut a Root, Will the Tree Die?
Cutting a surface root can look like a quick fix for a lumpy lawn or a lifted walkway — but done wrong, it can destabilize or slowly kill the whole tree.
Key tips before you cut:
- Never cut roots wider than about 2 inches, or more than 15% of the root system at once
- Keep any root pruning at least five trunk-diameters away from the trunk
- Winter or early spring is the safest season for root work
- When in doubt, ask first — our tree assessments are free

Is Tree Stump Removal Necessary?

An old stump rarely feels urgent — but the longer it sits, the more trouble it invites. Rotting stumps become homes for damaging pests like termites and carpenter ants, sprout stubborn regrowth, and get in the way of mowing and landscaping.
Full Stump Removal
Heaves out the stump and the bulk of the root plate. It’s more intrusive and takes heavier equipment, but you’re left with a clean slate for whatever you want to build or plant next.
Stump Grinding
Faster and far less disruptive. We grind the stump below ground level so you can seed or sod right over it — the old roots stay behind and break down naturally.
