What to do when a tree fallsRaritan added tree removal and replacement to its stormwater chapter in June 2024. On paper Section 315-85 asks anyone removing a non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more to submit a written request to the Department of Public Works before the tree comes down, with fees running from $50 for the smallest category up to $200 for anything 33 inches or over.
In practice the ordinance is harder to read than that. The same section goes on to say private-property trees are regulated on major developments, and that anything outside a major development is assessed case by case by Mayor and Council. Those three sentences do not sit comfortably together, which is why we call DPW about your specific tree rather than quoting you a rule. Residents removing fewer than four trees an acre over five years are exempt from replacement, and hazard trees carry no fee and no replacement at all.
