Our emergency serviceReadington has the most useful exemption in our whole service area, and most homeowners here do not know about it: any tree within 50 feet of an existing residence needs no permit at all. That covers a large share of ordinary removals around a farmhouse or a yard. Outside that radius, a permit is required from 6 inches DBH — or 18 inches around, as the application puts it — and the fee is $35 per tax lot.
For a working property there are two more that matter. Firewood cut for your own use is exempt up to three trees an acre a year, capped at 30% of the trees on the place. And woodland management is exempt only where the land has approved farmland assessment and both the plan and the WD-1 form are on file with the Tax Assessor — having a woodland plan alone is not enough, which is the detail that catches people out.
